Variegated clematis?

I planted this clematis last year. It’s meant to be a bog standard medium sized purple summer flowering type - I can’t remember the name off hand. Last year about 50% of the flowers were purple and green and it looks like it will be the same again. I have never seen anything like it and a google search brought up nothing similar. The plant is healthy and seems very happy so I don’t know why it’s like this. I am not complaining as it’s stunning but wondering if any others have seen this before in clematis.

I heard them talking on gardeners question time about things like this and it was said that any stress on the plant can produce this. For example, being too dry or the temperature being too low, maybe when the flowers were forming.

I'm not sure about this but its an idea
  • It is normal on many of the Viticella Group cultivars, for example Alba Luxurians and Caerulea Luxurians, usually on the earliest flowers, you will probably find the later flowers will be free of the green colouring.
  • Thank you - that’s really interesting
