Do you mean the buds are brown?
They perform best in a shadier spot, and do need soil that doesn't dry out too much. They can cope with sun if they have enough moisture at their feet. It's possible that they haven't been well enough hydrated while buds are forming.
A pic would help if you can manage it  :)

In warm spells, pots can need watering daily.  In hot spells, twice daily.

    They look like toasted marshmallows.
  • Is your white hydrangea the dwarf variety, Ave Maria?  I have the same problem.  Did you ever get to the bottom of why the edges go brown?

It's just what happen as the flowers start to go over - bruising from wind and rain and the effects of aging. It always shows up much worse on white flowers, think of buddleias and lilac!
