Sambucus and cotinus, propagation and moving

a1154a1154 Posts: 1,108
I have a smoke bush and a sambucus black lace, both have outgrown the area I planted them in. It says online to take cuttings right now, is that correct? You can find anything online! Are they easy to do? Reasonably successful ?  I like both and wouldn’t mind some others, planted with a bit more thought!
And prune and move them late autumn, yes?

Sambucus I've always done as hardwood cuttings, easy
Cotinus have a reputation for being tricky, I've never succeeded but cuttings aren't my best skill

Ah OK. I’ll concentrate on sambucus. So hardwood is a bit later, leave it for now?

You've nothing to loose by taking some softwood cuttings now.
If they don't strike, then try hardwood cuttings a bit later in the season.

A neighbour propagated cotinus by layering and gave me the resulting plant.

Could someone on here advise me how to take a Sambucus cutting please?

There's info from the RHS here
Try to take the cuttings early in the morning before it gets too warm.
Trim back the leaves to just 1-2" (this helps to prevent too much water loss) and leave them somewhere sheltered and out of direct sun.
I have to confess I've got enough of them so have never taken cuttings :)
    And good luck!
