Lawn issues

Hello,

I moved into a new house in January and after finally sorting the inside I am turning my attention to the garden. The lawn appears to be very straw like in patches, even looking dead. I would really like to have a nice lush lawn so would like a cure if possible, I have a feeling the grass is being torn rather than cut because the mower is no doubt very blunt... any ideas how to fix this or what it is?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The lawn needs a bit of a renovation. A good hard scarify in autumn, aerate and overseed the whole area. Chances are it's been left to get overgrown sometime in the past and unable to grow properly due to the thatch and woody stems.
  • Thanks Alex, was the lawn already like this when you moved in or was it greener? Also is the browning of the grass regular and affects the whole surface or does it form irregular patches? If irregular patches, do they spread?

What kind of mower is being used.  If electric rotary, the simplest way to fix it would be to buy a new blade.  They aren't expensive and are straight forward to fit.

The lawn was a lot greener but very long, about a foot tall. There seem to be large patches of brown but it does generally run the way I would mow it but not the entire lawn.

ill try a good scarify, new mower blade and I’ll cut less off and give you an update soon.

    Thanks
  • Agree with @glasgowdan, from what you describe there is nothing really wrong with you lawn, it has just been a bit neglected in the past and need some tlc. Regular racking would be good to remove the thatch. I would probably give it a bit of a drink too until it perks up.
