Gorgeous roses and you have inspired me to hold onto mine which have been disappointing in pots. They are in the soil at my allotment now really hoping they improve! Thank you!
I'm sorry I missed a couple of responses to my photos earlier, this forum moves rather quickly and I struggle to keep up with the messages.. so if it's not too late in replying...
MMflower.. thank you, I'm glad you liked my roses... yes I grow some in pots, 'Ballerina' a hybrid musk rose is particularly good.
wisehedgecrone, thank you. I think the rose you mean is the purple one it's called 'Forever Royal' and is a floribunda rose. Always in bloom throughout the season.
debs64, thank you, I hope your roses do well for you at your allotment. A great place to grow roses I think, very open and sunny usually...
Marlorena they have the sunniest bed in the allotment it's a fairly heavy clay soil with lots of horse manure worked in and I am really hoping that after 4 years of them struggling in pots they can look as good as yours one day.
@Marlorena , appreciate the response, doesn't matter if late....I can see the forum's really busy at the moment. One other thing, if you could please reply, what fertilizer do you apply to your roses and how often, especially now? And do you water everyday?
MMflower… just to answer your questions.. I had my soil tested by the RHS and it was found to be low in nitrogen [N] and potassium [K] but high is phosphorus [P] - probably typical for most British soils... ...my favourite fertilizer is David Austin rose fertilizer with an NPK of 9.5-7.5-10.0... I have outstanding results with this, but it's expensive and I cannot always get it from my local supplier.
Almost equally good, and my favourite easily obtainable one is Westland pelleted fertilizer with an NPK of 4 - 3.5 - 7... I also have great results with this one.
I have found both of these superior to some other popular brands I've used down the years... I'm also trying Miracle Gro Organic 7-6-7, so I have to wait and see the results on this one..
I feed mid March, again mid June, and I will feed some roses, Austin's in particular as they repeat bloom so much, in early August. As long as they get fed, most of them will do the trick, although I don't use chicken manure pellets. I read something about them, can't remember what, and decided against it.
I do not water established roses at all, but I do water first season roses, and during this warm spell I try to give them a bucket of water once a fortnight just lately.. but only first year. Potted roses I water thoroughly once a week, not every day.. my tap water is exceptionally hard and too much of this turns the leaves mottled yellow. I have no rain water left, probably like most people...
debs64,.. thanks again, I hope to see some photos of your roses in due course, likewise MMflower...
