Deadheading

Hi, wanting advice on deadheading Geum, i deadhead to a lower bud but if theres no bud do I go to the next leaf (which is usually tiny ) or right down to base?. Also does same apply to coneflower (the blue spikey flower with the grey hairy leaves).  Thanks..

    I would go down to the next leaf bud.

    I usually go to next leaf even if they are tiny, seems to work  :)

    I usually nip them off to the next pair of leaves, they soon grow new buds.
    I generally do most of my dead heading this way and it seems to work.:)
