Lawn Bugs

edited June 2018 in Problem solving
Lawn advice needed; our grass seems to be dying out going right back to soil. Managed to find these guys in the garden. Anyone have any idea what they are? I'm assuming they might be grubs or something and in turn killing the grass.

It certainly is, and although it will eat grass, that isn't your problem. There could be leather jackets but I notice the soil looks in fairly poor heart. What's the history of your lawn and lawn care?
  • Thanks both; we are in a new build and we have had trouble with the lawn from the off (two years). The lawn has been completely relaid due to lack of topsoil. Each time the grass has struggled. In patches it is extremely thin. We have done everything, fed it, watered it, even prayed with it 😊. Any advice? I heard someone else on the development mention issues with leather jackets.

How much sun does it get through the day? Which direction does the lawn face?

We are pretty lucky with the sun; the garden is south facing and apart from a strip at the bottom of the garden about half meter deep it's in the sun most of the day.
  • We had the same issue with our new build. I think it's a general problem because all the bits of bricks ect are usually just chucked into the garden also it will be compacted alot due to diggers and general workers being on it constantly. Then a poor layer of soil is chucked on the top, then the turf is layed. I think our turf had a plastic mesh underneath! which seemed to stop the grass from rooting.
I forked ours constantly to help with drainage, fed and seeded it for at least a few months. It finally started to grow and become lush grass. If we hadn't moved house... I needed a quick fix. Then I probably would have taken the grass up and started all over again!.

Did you bring in any topsoil?   If not, your grass is never going to grow well.   The soil needs forking over thoroughly to remove rubble and rubbish and break up hard lumps of sub-soil, then raking level and smooth and then improving with plenty of well-rotted manure and garden compost.

It will  then be ready for seeding or turfing in September or April when the temperatures and rain levels are most favourable.

  • We originally found all sorts of rubbish under the turf when we moved in. The builder then agreed as per regulations that they would dig out 100mm, refill with topsoil and then returf. Apart from curing the ruble issues we had the garden seems to be having the same issue with it getting so thin. I just can't understand why it's still not taking
