New to cuttings

So when it comes to cuttings, I am a total beginner... I tried a few last year and while the rosemary cuttings were a success the Privet ones never rooted. Now that I have a greenhouse, more space and time, I want to give it another go. This month I am planning to take cuttings from the following plants:
Buxus
Privet
Yew
Lavender
Rosemary
Salvia
Nepeta
Clematis
Can anyone confirm it is OK to take softwood cuttings from these? Or should I wait longer and take semi-ripe cuttings/ hard cuttings instead for some?
Thanks a million!

Cuttings can be hit and miss as to timing. Try one set now, and another set in a few weeks.

They don't need greenhouse conditions. Keep them somewhere cool and shady and keep moist. I would try for semi-ripe cuttings about 3 inches long, dipped in hormone rooting compound and then put around the outside of a clay pot filled with gritty soil.
And take a lot more than you think you need.

  • OK thank you, @fidgetbones as advised I will try taking cuttings at different times (now and later this summer) and thanks @hogweed, I will keep them out of the greenhouse this time.
