  Ok ... so here are the trees. This is after a so called tree surgeon massacred them earlier in the year. As you can see they both still over hang my garden. The big one’s overhang is at least 3meters now.

  The spire like flowers with the sweet scent sounds like lilac which as above, do send out suckers.

  Paving slabs on edge would certainly deter the progress of the suckers. A technique used when planting figs which need their root run restricted.

  A big problem. Good luck.
