beech tree has no leaves this year

we have a 60 foot beech tree and this year it has no leaves on it as at 8th June 2018.What do you think has happened. It must be a few hundred years old.I have looked at a branch then snapped it and there is still evidence of some green. The husks are on it and when I take it off there is a very small leaf like green bud.if it has died do we have to remove it-that will be a great big task or is it diseased and may recover next year?

I think you need to get a qualified tree surgeon to examine it and, if it is a goner, he or she can quote for its removal.

It's either dead or it's dying, large trees don't recover from that state.
