I've just remembered Nandina domestica (heavenly bamboo). Again very slow growing, interesting leaves, white flowers, red berries which remain all winter.
Lizzie, i bought two Nandina domestics (firepower) and they struggled for a year, i potted them up, they had what i thought was a massive surge in health and looked pretty good last year.......here's the thing, they have taken until now to look anything like acceptable (for pots near the door) obviously looked rubbish over winter. Never seen flower or berry on them either. Autumn colour......not so grand. and i just wonder what you would think...give them some more years, will they get better with age? strong feed? actually i will check they're not too root bound also, but shouldn't be, pots aren't too small.
Berberis Thun. Atropurpurea - a slightly bigger, but still very slow growing, reddish plum version against the dark purple Pittosporum Tunuifolium Atropurpurea is a lovely, but not too vivid (nice way of saying gharish buy the way ) contrast. That might work well with the Cotinus too. My Admiration is quite vivid, Berberis Red Rocket is brownish-plum coloured and an upright form. All long-lasting foliage colour but the white flowers are barely noticeable. Nandina Domestica Firepower has a richer colour than the normal ND. I do like the shrub Dove recommended, tho, very pretty and one I shall be adding to my ever growing list...
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Hello UpNorth, I think the answer to your query is yes, they do seem to take a long time to get going. Mine's only just started flowering and berrying after 10 years in a pot (60th birthday presie from a friend as an unusual plant). I think feeding definitely helps.
