Depends on how dry and how smooth the wood is.  If it's been planed it will have a smoother surface and take longer.  If it's rough it will need 2 coats as suggested above.  Either way, 24 hours before using to allow maximum absorption and then judge whether it needs another coat.   Worth doing well cos it'll be a nightmare to do once in place on  the ground.

If it was me, I would not bother at all. I find wood treated with Cuprinol does not make it last any longer - it still rots. I have used untreated scaffold planks in part of my garden and 15 years later they are still going strong. No treatment, no plastic to protect them..........On my fences, once I had gone through the Cuprinol shade card/Groundforce stage I used Butinox. Has lasted for 10+ years with no further coats. But is expensive.

  • Thanks to all of you, I have decided to treat them with a water based Ronseal one coat (I was given it) and have been assured it safe. The wood is 4x4 inches so quite thick so hopefully will last quite a while. We will see. Thanks again though!
