How many Crocosmia to a clump?

NollieNollie Posts: 7,529
The Lucifer and Masonorium in my 9cm pots are about 40cm high, healthy looking and itching to go out but I’m not sure how many to plant together and how close?

The Emily McKensies are quite a bit smaller, about 15cm high. I read they are less rampant and quite short-lived so was thinking of 20cm apart for these ones so they clump up more quickly (I don’t mind dividing them if they get too big). Or do I need to give them more growing time in the poly?

There is one corm per pot.

I have never grown Crocosmia before, so any advice folks?

Thanks.

They will clump up on their own, especially Lucifer. If you plant one corm and it's reasonably happy you'll have a clump over a metre high and about half a metre across in about 3 years. Emily Mackenzie is much smaller but it does clump up a bit. As you say though, it's shorter lived. I don't know Masonorium.
I have about half a dozen different ones, one or two that are struggling to get going, a couple that needed splitting the second year they were in. They vary a lot.

Depending how big a display you need (and how many) I'd put 5 or 7 Emilys together but no more than 3 Lucifers or you'll be splitting them again in no time.

That’s great, thanks raisingirl. I think masonorium are meant to quite vigorous too, so will restrict them to threes for now as well. As for planting distances, I dug out the info that came with the corms (duh, should have thought of that earlier) and they all say to plant in the ground 10cm apart, maybe I’ll do that with the Emilys and plant the others a bit further apart...

Now I just have to work out which are Lucifer and which are Mason, since their leaves and growth pattern look identical (managed to mix them up). Will probably just have to go with it and see what I get...
