When to cut my new lawn?

  • Thanks for your reply Chris, I am about to sow some grass too (I prepared the ground pretty much in the same way you did) but have not bought the seeds yet so I am very much tempted to buy the same as you (me two have a young son, 2.5 years old so I need something hard wearing). Your grass really looks AMAZING, your hard work with the preparation has certainly paid off. Really well done because it is not that easy to grow beautiful grass like you did. ...

In other words, shed loads of hard work, patience and attention. Congratulations.
Indeed. Fantastic job, the kids will love it, Id get it cut and enjoying it. Im tempted to post a photo or my new bit of grass to show you what no hard work, no patience and no attention gives you!

In the words of Roy Cropper:
" If you fail to prepare, you should prepare to fail"
This is a perfect case of whey the preparation is so important.

With all that hard work and prep you are definately being rewarded. Heres me sweating over doing what you have but for a lawn a quarter of the size!!

Thanks everyone for your feedback and kind words.

It was a lot of work to get it where it is now but it was worth it in the end. It took several weeks altogether, including around 9 days straight just preparing the soil area (rotavating, adding new topsoil and levelling the ground). I couldn't have got it where it is without my Dad's help, I wouldn't have dared taking on something so big on my own!

I'll post a photo on here after I've given it the first cut this weekend, although I'm going to set the blades as high as they will go to leave it as long as possible, so I'm not expecting a huge transformation immediately.

don't panic if it doesn't look "great" after the first cut. It'll take a few cuts to get it "lawn" length. You can cut every 3 days but try to take no more than 1/3 - 1/2 the length at a time.

  • Seriously, your grass is perfection. All you need now is to add flower borders :)

Thanks. Yes that's the plan to keep taking a bit off at a time to get it down to a manageable length.

The flower borders are phase 2! Need to try and decide what to plant first then sow some seed either later this year or early next spring. The border by the hedge doesn't get much sun so I'm looking for something that will grow in the shade and also look good all year around
