Knotweed or not weed?!

Any opinions on my neighbours plant would be most welcome as it's spreading in my general direction!

  • I've never had JKW or seen it in the flesh (so to speak), but I would get that checked out professionally.

The description looks rather similar to your photos; leaf shape, some zigzag stems. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm sure you'll  get a far more authoritative opinion on this forum than i could ever give, though, so just wait.

I am sorry to say this, but it is JKW.

Yes it's JKW. Spray it now.

Yup knotweed, small and understated at the moment, just the right time to kill it.
  • I understand that spraying knotweed is not a solution as it needs to be removed professionally??
Also it's on a neighbours land so not under our 'control'. Any opinion on what to do please

You can - actually you should - spray it to control it but it won't eradicate it as it will keep coming in from your neighbour's side. If you do it yourself it may take longer to get of it than if you pay someone to do it but in your situation you could spend a lot of money getting it removed every year until your neighbours deal with it from their side, so spraying it wherever you see it on your side as an interim may be more practical.

The RHS have lots of advice here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=218 on the legal position and on what you can reasonably do to control it. You are legally obliged to do something about it - your neighbour is as well.
