What is this weed?

Hi

I have a garden in Edinburgh and this weed/plant seems to dominating one of my borders. Its roots are very difficult to get out and breaks off easily. They wrap themselves around the roots of my rose bushes and hydrangea. They also give off a distinct smell when pulling them up.

As you can see there are loads of roots in the ground and i am looking for advice on how to dear with it.

Any help is very gratefully received

Thanks

That looks like Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon'

It is reputedly quite invasive in some circumstances ... I don't grow it.  I'd try painting  a glyphosate gel onto the leaves if its roots were entangled among my shrubs.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

A friend gave me " a bit" of it. I left it in the pot for about a million years in full sun and didn't water it until I was sure it was dead. I was too scared to even put it in the compost bins.

Snap Hosta 😄. Yet another "gift" of a lovely little ground cover plant from my mum 😕.
Have learned my lesson from previous thuggish offerings and googled it first 😉.
