Caring for strawberries

Could I please have advice on how to look after our strawberries.  For the past 3 years I have put straw down so the strawberries don’t touch the soil and it seems to have worked fine.  However, I have run out of straw and the shop I used to get the straw from has gone out of business and I can’t seem to find anywhere else to buy this.

Do you have any suggestions I could try to keep the strawberries off the ground?

Kind regards,
Peggy

Hi Peggy - You can use gravel, but just look out for slugs etc. hiding in nooks and crannies. I've also used a bit of landscape fabric in the past - just peg it, or weight it,  down. I believe wood shavings work quite well too. You should be able to get all of them quite easily. Pet shops, diy stores and G.Cs. Online too, if you have none of those nearby  :)
I mostly grow in pots now, so it's less of an issue for me.

    I think I used shavings myself Peggy - but it's so long ago I can't remember! :D
You'd have to dampen them a little if it was very dry - just to stop them blowing around.

Here's to a good crop for you   :)
