'Papa Meilland' climbing rose

I would love to find a 'Papa Meilland' climbing rose. The bush form seems freely available, but not the climber (in the UK). Have you any thoughts on this?  I imagine there would some reason for this.

    A very obscure rose these days, very few stockists.  I wonder why this one especially? considering it's so difficult to obtain, however, if you would like to try and contact this French supplier, they may be able to help you, although like most places it's out of stock at the moment, but the bare root season is finished, so I expect they will have it back in stock in November.   I imagine they would ship to the UK, but you would need to contact them.

    I know of no other nursery that has it, currently [I have been looking for you, Fire]..
    and in case your French is not up to scratch, grimpant means climbing [but I know you knew that]...

    Interesting. Thanks M for looking into it. Can I ask why it fell out of favour? Low disease resistance? I saw pictures and red about it and it sounds divine - just about my perfect rose....  These guys look like they might stock it in the autumn too.

    I've no idea why it's not offered more generally, I've never seen it offered in this country as far as I know, I only bought the bush form many years ago, and knew nothing about the climbing version..   If you imported it you would probably be one of the few people in this country to have it I should think...

    It's a bit of trouble to go to, and there are so many roses out there, so I hope you think it's going to be worth the trouble on this one..

    Cants of Colchester supplied this to me about thirty odd years ago, if that’s any help.  It’s a magnificent rose, very vigorous with lovely big blooms of stunning red petals, full of fragrance. Or maybe Peter Beales, both rose growers in east angliamight stock it or could help source it for you.  It does grow large tho

    Thanks to you both. You're both selling it to me! It seems I have a very specific idea somewhere in my head, or what I'm looking for. I think it would be worth going for, if I can find one. I've decided to start covering an arch / shed with a climbing red this winter. I had settled on Etoile de Holland / Crimson Glory, but maybe this one instead...

    Apparently Papa Meilland is very inclined to mildew and that is why it was dropped. x

    I might go for the Crimson Glory/Etoile combo.

    My daughter, who lives in France, so do I, bought a Papa Meilland from a French nursery some years ago. It was gorgeous, until it got mildew. They are quite prone to disease.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
