Philadelphus belle etoile

Hello All,

Just wondering whether many of you grow the abovementioned shrub and could recommend it or not. Thanks.

They are easy to grow and quite hardy. I have one by accident. A neighbour was upset because hers never flowered and was adamant that it was not a philadelphus. I took a cutting because it looked like one to me, (although I am unsure if it is belle etoile).

It turned out that she had been going out with the secateurs in spring cutting off all the flowereing shoots and it was indeed a philadelphus.

They have a lovely scent, flower about now and they can be pruned after flowering, but personally I don't bother. It has never got in the way and has a good shape that I like.

I have two, they flower really well but they have no scent.  Don't know why.

  • That's very  disappointing/ maddening !,  I hope you weren't sold the wrong plant by mistake, did you order it online and has it got the maroon eye in the centre of the flower like it's supposed to ?.

I have one but the first year after it was planted, a zealous gardener cut it to the ground. It in now in its second year of growth since then but no flowers as yet.

My old neighbours had one and it was covered with black fly all summer, looked horrid.
  • I've had one for a few years now, I even moved it in high summer and it survived. It's absolutely covered in buds and I know that when they break they will smell delicious. I would certainly recommend it.
