Ericaceous liquid feed

snowyysnowyy Posts: 58
Hi
ive got some heathers that i planted a couple of months ago that dont seem to be growing, these were planted into a neutral to slightly alkaline soil as at the time i wasnt aware they were acid loving plants. Since then the flower bed has been weed fabriced and mulched with blue slate chippings so looking at making soil more acidic with a feed. Found an ericaceous feed at wilkos, will regular watering with this turn the soils more acidic and make my heathers grow? Also i couldnt find any info on the grow rate of heathers so maybe the fact they havent grown yet is not a bad thing, theses were plug plants and a mixture of summer/wintering flowering.

Thanks, yes wasn’t sure how long they take to get established but was hoping they they haven’t grown much as they are finding there feet. The liquid ericaceous feed doesn’t say it provides an acidic environment just says its for acid loving plants so wasn’t sure if it just had a different nutrients to regular plant feed.

I would not consider heathers to be fast growing plants
  • The summer-flowering Callunas seem to be more fussy about acidity than the winter-flowering Ericas. Ericas do very well in my garden, which is not acidic, but Callunas are a failure. Similarly, Rhododendrons do not thrive but deciduous Azaleas do well.

The feed will not make the soil more acidic but will make nutrients available that otherwise would be locked up in your non acidic soil. If you really want to make the soil more acidic you will need to spread sulphur chips or a similar product but the effect will only be temporary.
