    Thanks for the input..........definitely not begonias, not a plant I like.  I did plant anemone nemorosa 'wood anemone' seeds......a possibility.  As @Fairygirl mentioned they are definitely rhizome/tuberous growing plants.....would they have developed such a large tuberous growth in 12/18 months?.  Maybe I was given them last year?  I can't recall.  Think I'll just plant them and see what flower appears.

    Googled gunnera............hope it's not that, classed as an alien invasive plant, introduced here 100 years ago!

    Crikey, googled images of aforementioned plants, they all look huge.......hope it's nothing as big
