Inspiration needed for filling a bath!

polbpolb Posts: 198
Hi,

We've inherited an outside cast iron bath which when painted should look great! I've been looking around for ages to find some plants which will -
1 - bloom for a long time
2 - not be swamped by the size of the 'container' and
3 - thrive in a large container with almost full sun.

I'd love yellow, blue and purple/pink. Can anyone recommend anything? If there was an element of evergreen in there as well, great... Has anyone had great success with large blooming plants which would suit a bath?! B)

Thanks in advance for your ideas :)

In mine I've got some nice water mint for purple/pink, flag iris and marsh marigold for yellow and water forget-me-not for blue. It's a pond if you hadn't guessed but might be a good option for you too. If you can rig up a pump to run water through the taps and return via the overflow it would be a fun feature too. You could even get a rubber duck to float around in there too ;)
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Sounds a great idea but it's a long way from the mains water and electric and we already have a couple of ponds.. I might look into the forget me nots though for one of the ponds! B thank you!

I had wondered about trailing petunias and lobelia at the front end with something mid height behind them (yellow) and then something like tall grasses or an evergreen at the back.. Any thoughts? :|

Salvia sylvestris would look lovely, and give a reasonable height without over doing it.  Deadhead and wait for a second flush of long lasting flowers.  Yellow Supertunia (petunia hybrid of some sort) as a filler/spiller would create a great contrast with the salvia.  They self deadhead and keep blooming all summer.  Torenia 'Yellow Moon' would look amazing too.. it would link the yellows and purples in the blooms.

:DThanks for the inspiration Paul B3!

Thanks Blue Onion - Love your idea of the salvia and the yellow petunias and then linking the two! Fab! I might look to see if there's something blue that could also trail down! Thank you! :)
