Rose buds not blooming

Hi, i have two rose bushes that usually are prolific bloomers, this year the buds dont seem to be maturing fully. I did have a bad greenfly problem but i sprayed with warm soapy water and they have now gone for the most part. I have given them a feed etc. The only difference was this year i didnt get to prune until early this year and normally do that in late November after they finish flowering. Pick attached! Any advice appreciated.

I often find with some varieties that the first flush of blooms don't come to anything even though they get the same conditions as others which bloom fine. Could it be a shortage of water?

I find that happens from time to time ...  it's a bit like the first pancake of a batch (which usually gets given to the dog)  ;)

The recent heavy rain being the main culprit would be my guess too (see link above).  We used to have a climbing rose over a pergola but almost every year we would have that problem.  It wasn't helped by being in shade until mid afternoon so the water had plenty of time to sit in the part opened buds.
  • Thanks, beginning of the year was very bad here in Ireland, lots of rain, frost and very cold and now we are experiencing very hot weather for the last couple of weeks, i had thought that might be the issue but started thinking maybe it was something i was doing or hadnt done, none the less new buds coming on now too and they look alot better. Ill just have to wait a bit longer to see/smell them. Thanks again
