Border plants that can co-exist with Red Robin patio tree

I would like to plant perennials under my Red Robin Photinia (grasses interspersed with colour). The soil is clay heavy and the site is mostly shady with a few hours of direct sun. I want to achieve different heights but want all year round interest and something I can nurture. Any tips for treating the soil and plants that would work well under this patio tree without any detrimental affects to the tree, would be very welcome. Thank you.

There is not really room around the base of that tree for any significant planting.
How can you lie there and think of England

You could use pots round it like those square ones though or build up to create a raised bed with a central cut out to keep the trunk clear of earth. This kind of thing:

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
