@tessagardenbarmy, surely you don't mean the top 6 inches, that would remove the entire root system.

    Thanks to the replies!
I have learn a lot from this discussion!

So, if my pot is too deep and it’s drainage is not very good, would it be safe to repot it now?
Im worried it will disturb it too much as it looks quite vulnerable.
but then if I live it, it will definitely not be happy!

It's probably safe to repot now but normally you'd do it before the leaves got too mature so it's a bit borderline on the timing. If you do it now keep it out of the sun and keep a good eye on the soil so it doesn't get too dry. Try not to break up the root ball too much.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

It has been a very bad year for them. I've turfed about a hundred out of various pots so far. The birds have been very pleased.

You asked how big a pot to use. The one you have looks about the right size only it should be straight or v-shaped sides where the top is bigger than the bottom. I use JI no. 2 for mine with added grit. Your grit is fine as well. Put some broken crocks in to the bottom of your new pot, if you don't have any old crocks, use bits of polystyrene broken up. The aim is to cover the hole so the soil doesn't get washed out but not to plug it. Mix your soil of choice with a good 3-4 trowelfuls of grit and pot the tree so that the new soil is at the same level as the original soil and the whole lot is a couple of inches lower than the rim of the pot. Then add about an inch of grit to the top. Water and keep in a partially shady place for a few weeks out of the wind.

Hi. OK 6 inches maybe too much if plant well established there maybe roots close to surface.  My biggest problem was roots coming out the bottom when I moved house and pots had to saw off tap root that had grown through bottom of pot into gravel below! With lots of tlc the Acer survived and is now over 6 foot high and still in in a pot, albeit a bigger one.
