I went on a trip to Highgrove a couple of years ago. The lady escorting us around said that Prince Charles does get out there with his sleeves rolled up and gardens. He doesn't just give the gardeners instructions. Unfortunately I did not see all his garden as I had a dodgy sandwich at the motorway service en route, and threw up on his doorstep. A buggy was summoned and I was quickly transported back to base.
Tickets for chelsea are expensive, but on a par with going to a pop concert, which many of the young seem to have enough money to do. A trip to most garden centres, and you will find that most of the customers are of "a certain age" as my OH puts it.
I don't think they were too pleased. I was removed very rapidly. I don't think he was in residence at the time. There can't be many whose claim to fame is throwing up the the Heir to the Throne's doorstep.
Prince Charles doesn’t limit his gardening to highgrove. He has restored an estate in Romania which when he is not in residence is let out as a guest house. He is trying to preserve the nature of the Carpathia mountains. Replanted wild meadows and restoring Saxon villages. No I don’t think he was physically doing a bit of dry walling and chucking handfuls of seeds about but without his love of nature and conservation these estates would just be another crumbled ruin in rural transavania.
To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.

He was also responsible for the regeneration of Dumfries house on the outskirts of Auchinleck which has nice gardens as well. Decent fella imo.
Just catching up on some of the Chelsea coverage and I was aghast at that photographer chap saying 'gardening is a middle-class pursuit' and only middle-class people visit Chelsea. I almost punched the tv I was that incensed! Did anyone else pick up on that? or was it only me?
I wouldn’t get too incensed, though I understand your point of view.
In a way ALL hobbies are very middle class. They have all the spare money, they spend it, retailers love it, advertise to them, and the media observes and reports.
They say the same about cycling. So basically any British kid makes it into the middle class at around five year old..?

Pleased to hear that the heir-to-the-throne gets dirt under his fingernails ... I'm afraid I'd always assumed he was a bit of a cheque-book gardener.
They make me feel, not exactly young, but more a person of an uncertain age
