Advice needed please on this shrub

My son has moved into a new house and has found several shrubs all have the same problem (?) can I please ask should he just dig them all up and replace them with something that doesn’t get this disease? Thank you for any help you can give me, Muriel

I think it's viburnum leaf beetle.

  • Hostafan1 thank you for your reply. I’m new to gardening. So is this shrub a viburnum? Thanks Muriel xHostafan1 said:

Yes Muriel you have a viburnum. Possibly V. Tinus
There's one just around the corner from me with the same infestation. Smells awful too.
The link Hosta has provided gives info on how to treat it.

I just leave them to get on with it. The plant does recover with no assistance. In fact Tinus is virtually bombproof.

Thanks Hogweed for the reply. We have 12 of these shrubs and they are in such a sad state and as Pete8 says they smell really awful. It’s so bad that even a family member made a comment about the smell in the garden wondering if the drain was blocked. At that time I had no idea it was coming from the shrubs. We’ve spent the day digging them up, hard work but the garden looks so much better. Muriel x
