What plants can I grow on a bank under trees?

At the bottom of my garden there is a row of beech trees and it slopes down to form a bank. The roots are very close to the surface of the soil under the trees. I pile leaves on it to try and break up the soil but nothing seems to grow and it is clay soil. Any ideas?

Snowdrops, bluebells and primroses work for us on a beech bank. These are mostly in flower before the beech come out so don't suffer in the deep shade that beechs cast later. Ferns might work too. And I'm also planting epimediums under trees - I expect them to work, but can't yet vouch for it! You might also be able to make headway with hellebores. And possibly Geranium nodosum.
