Removing slugs and snails

My slugs and snails are not welcome in the garden, but I'd like an alternative to simply destroying them. All I can think of is collecting them in a big covered bucket and releasing them a couple of miles away. Any other suggestions?

    Learn to love them, they do more good than harm. Garden snails are a bit too prolific here so I slap some in snail jail and take them up the woods where I know there are a lot of hungry young thrushes right now. On a damp night I'll prowl the veg beds with a scissors and thin the slug numbers but mostly I rely on beer traps these days.
    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    I have a large flower border in my front garden. This is also where I feed the birds (all year round) and I honestly can say that I have never ever seen a single snail/slug or never had any damage to my flowers since I started to feed them. The birds are happy, my flowers are happy and I am happy, works well for everyone. Let the birds do the dirty job would be my advice (of course it works well for a flower border but maybe not in the vegetable garden!).
