Cosmos problem

Anyone know what is going on with my cosmos? they have suddenly started to come out in what looks like either black or dark brown spots/marks, this has been the worst year of gardening, it’s very frustrating, no idea if this is fixable or just to throw them out and go buy plants.

Any input on what it could be would be much appreciated, I have checked the roots, they are white and developed and the stem all the way down looks fine, no rot/blemishes.

It looks like canker. Cosmos like hot, dry conditions and that is not what it has been like for most of the year, though things are improving. You should still get some flowers, though probably not as many you would like. The good news is you can save the seed, which will not be affected. Good luck.
Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
  • I’ve sprayed them with fungus fighting spray but I’m not sure that will work? and I don’t really want to plant them and potentially infect all my other plants, I just don’t know what’s happened this year, I started my seeds in sieved multi-purpose compost instead of seed compost, I don’t know if that’s anything to do with it but all my marigold seedlings appear to be ill too
  • Here’s the marigold problem, not sure if it’s the same thing? i don’t know if it’s something that spreads/is infectious
