Rampant Cardoon

A year ago I planted a Cardoon, it has been very successful in fact to successful. How do I control it, it's taking over. From the innocent end of season sorrowful plant it is now 4 foot high (which is ok) but spreading to 2 foot. It wouldn't be so bad if the leaves didn't keep flopping. Any suggestion on how to control this thug.

It will spread at least 5-6 ft by the time it's full grown.

Soz Lyn. I'll see if they produce better seed this time. None of mine from the same batch germinated either. Your seed sowing skills are not in question.
