I'm a sucker for gardening books.. always going to that section in the charity shops to look for a new find. I would even keep all my gardening magazines according to month, and reread those each year. It's unfortunate that the US doesn't have all the fine gardening magazines and authors that you have in the UK. I haven't found a single good magazine to subscribe to.. and the climate differs so much it's difficult to find a good book for basic information about where I live.
I quite liked Alan Titchmarsh - How to garden. It's full of really useful basic information, a must have if you are starting out I reckon. I also like the Encyclopedia of garden design by the RHS and What plant when also by the RHS.
I'm on the lookout for a good book that would cover the growing of a small amount of veg in a small raised bed or container (salad crops probably).
I've got an old reader's digest book. The one with the hessian cover. Apart from the out of date pesticide advice, it's good for how to stuff. But, to be honest, I use the internet more than books. The only books that must be paper for me are cookery books.
I loved the Reader's Digest book to creative gardening that came out in the early 80s. I used to refer it so much, it only went to the charity shop last year, and l sometimes wish l had kept it! Hopefully someone else is getting pleasure from it now.
I too, like Alan Titchmarsh's How to be a Gardener and still dip into it now and again.
I'm afraid I'm a garden book fanatic and have about 4 shelves full - most of them good in their own way. Beth Chatto's Garden Notebook, any of Carol Klein's, AT's The Kitchen Garden, Container Planting, The RHS Encylopedia keeps me entranced for hours. Another good one is Claire Austin's book on Perennials. I just love reading and the internet just doesn't do it for me!
