  I was reading about a bag you can hang from apple trees that contains a sticky strip and releases a pheromone that attracts male moths (prevents them from mating with females who then lay little caterpillar eggs on the fruit). 
  Perhaps there is something similar for wasps? It may have been one of the gardening mags (amateur gardener possibly) where I came across the article.
  Sorry I don't have a definitive answer but it might be worth a wee look.

  You can buy a dummy wasp nest which is supposed to deter them.  Don't know how well that would work.

  Hi Waspinator works well for me.monty don advocated it a few years ago. Needs to be hung within a few metres of previous wasp issues or area you want to deter
  It mimics a large wasps nest
