Will fresh Hazel stakes sprout?

Possibly a daft question, but have just staked a load of newly planted perennials. I run out of my pile of pre-cut ones so just cut some more fresh from the trees and pushed them in. I stripped off all the leaves and sacrificed a few developing nuts, but have I just planted a new hazel grove in my border?! Should I have treated the ends with something?

I did this with elder and elm and both rooted! Not tried it with hazel but it's possible to take cuttings of it so maybe. I did find that any I had pushed in upside down didn't root.

Ah, I have done a forked type basket support, with the thicker stem pushed in the the right way up and the smaller twiggy branches interwoven. Hope I don’t have to pull it all out and start again as it took me AGES  :/

Could you girdle them with a sharp knife, just to be safe?

Will give that a go, thanks Blue Onion. For others I haven’t done yet I will whittle off the bark below ground and paint them with PVA just to be sure!
