Rose recommendations please

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
Can anyone recommend a highly scented bush rose , repeat flowering preferred, that would be happy in a large container  for a few years? (can be planted out later if it isn't happy)
Most aspects available - any colour but Barbie pink or sludge purple!
I would be grateful for any suggestions before I'm tempted to go out and do the impulse thing.

White/blush - 'Desdemona' - medium sweet old rose fruity - very healthy
Yellow/butterscotch - 'Absolutely Fabulous' - strong myrrh scent - large healthy glossy foliage..
Purple - 'Munstead Wood'  - strong old rose scent... thorny..

ok... there are plenty more out there too, I can give you others later on or some research from websites will bring up any that takes your fancy...  there are so many to choose from but I would make sure your rose has a stated height of no more than 4 feet, and preferably in the 3-3.5 range...

I know scent is a subjective thing but I wish there was a 1-10 scale.
I once asked a rose grower to explain the terminology and he said he'd sold a rose with the scent that would knock you over at 5paces and the purchaser returned them complaining that there was no smell so he became circumspect about grading the scent.

Yes, noses are subjective and roses change during and over the years. I've just put in a Barkarole red rose bush that is supposed to knock me over at 5 paces. Can't wait to see how it is. It's not widely available, which is a bit of a worry. I'm thinking that if it was so great, everywhere would sell it...

I know it' not david austin...but the churchill rose has both a beatiful scent and wonderful repeat flowering. It is higher maintenene than da roses as they have better disease resistance

I have two Gertrude jekyll and prefer the scent from churchill

I'm not overly impressed with DA roses. Some seem to be prima donas. Jason and fire, will look out for your recommendations. Went to gc today alooking prior to your posts but didn't come back empty handed . No roses Bedding plants seduced me. I was helpless.

You’re right Fire, scent is so subjective and depends whether or not you have a good sense of smell, which I suspect I don’t.  I get very little from all my young DA’s, with the exception of Munstead Wood which this year is gorgeous, so it’s true the scent develops with age. I still have to stick my nose in to get it, tho. It’s a great intense colour and pretty compact, so far.

I recently planted a Gertrude J in a large pot by a seating area in the hope I might be able to smell that without the nose diving. Might be a bit ‘barbie’ for you B3 - colour also being very subjective!
