Crocosmia

mattgardenmattgarden Posts: 109
Hi all

Total newbie to gardening and plants, but thoroughly enjoying it  I've recently laid a lawn and now I am tackling a part of the borders.

I went to our local garden centre yesterday for some inspiration. I really liked some crocosmia they had but they were £9 a plant and id like multiple. Yet they had bulbs at much cheaper.

My question is, is it too late to plant the bulbs now? I don't mind if they won't flower this year now, as long as they are in place when I plant the rest of the border

TIA

I reckon if you plant them now they will be fine, and you will probably still get a few blooms this year. £9 a plant is pretty hefty for crocosmia, the bulbs multiply like crazy, if you dont mind waiting then bulbs every time

Awesome. Thank you for your help  Yes I was surprised at the price, especially once I learned that they are bulbs

Lots of sites say Sept/October, others say early spring, but an article by Monty in May 2014 says it's not too late to plant....http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/gardening/article-2640346/Bulbs-really-light-home-not-late-plant-gorgeous-summer-bulbs-save-fortune-florists-says-Monty-Don.html If you are not desperate for them to flower, give it a try I say, but then I can be a little gungho when it comes to planting stuff lol!

I planted a load of GC reduced bulbs last year in about mid june. A few bloomed late on, and they all made growth. It looks as though most of them are coming through this year so I think they will be fine in May

Look and see if any of your neighbours have got any. They would probably be glad to give you some for nothing!

They must be fancy varieties for that price surely? I bet more corms are thrown away each year than are sold. It's almost criminal to charge for them.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I got confused with another plant. They were £7 but still pretty pricey, right?

That looks a good pot full for £6.99.
