Grit

Watching Life in a Cottage Garden, I notice that Carol Klein uses quite a lot of grit on the top of pots of newly planted seeds. Is this essential, seems a hefty amount?

I know.. she loves the stuff.  I think it's part habit and part what-suits-her-area.. some plants certain love a bit of grit.. and evident it can be useful in dissuading slugs and snails, and it acts as sort of a mulch when she puts it on top.
