Very young Silver birch

My silver birch is about ten feet high and about three inches in diameter. Would I be damaging it if I grew a clemmie up it ?

It won't help. The extra foliage will catch the wind and be heavier when wet. It might also cover the birch leaves if it grows vigourously. The birch should be fairly established at that height but is it worth the risk?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

What about putting up some sort of frame that comes in two parts around your tree?

I don't understand why one would want to hide the beautiful silver bark on the trunk of a young silver birch, let alone detract from the elegant form of its branches.

I would grow a clematis up an obelisk elsewhere and enjoy the silver birch's beautiful simplicity.
