Thymus Argenteus cut back?

Before the beast i had a lovely clump of the lemon scented silver Thymus Argenteus. A lot of it has died due to the cold and my nasty clay soil. So I've taken it out and cut of all the dead and am left with 3 small pieces with some growth on the end. Can i cut back into old wood to get it branching out or will it die back?
I potted it up in a compost with good drainage and will re-site it in a place with better drainage.

In the meantime, to cut these little bits back or not?
