Yes Hogweed, there are some good bargains there. i normally just get the ones in the cellophane tubes, but I really don't need anymore. i also look on the inside shelves and find some good little plants there.

TBG. I pot them up and leave them outside all Winter. They always pop up in the Spring.

B&Q is awash with bedding, but if you look hard they have perennials (including geums) 4 for £10.

Hardy geraniums would tick your boxes. I'm a big fan of Geranium Rozanne because it flowers from May until about Oct/Nov - a hard-working plant! It has nice blue flowers, is typically £10 although I got mine for a fiver at a county show. Worth every penny IMHO. You should be able to propagate by division although I haven't tried it yet. It can handle some shade but is better in sun. For the shadier spot, you could consider a geranium phaeum or pulmonaria (which also propagate by division).
  • Would geum and geranium look alright together do you think?  I've been reading up on them this afternoon and they both seem to be just what I'm after; solid, hardworking, colourful plants.

Regarding B&Q being full of annual bedding plants, my only worry is I accidentally end up with a pelagonium!
The phaeum is a nice geranium Garden Noob, quite a few to choose from as well.

I reckon I'll get better value taking a wee trip to B&Q (if I'm careful) than I'll get from Dobbies.

    Thanks again.

I think a clematis would struggle near that tree TBG. It doesn't look like there's much room and there'll be a lot of competition for moisture, which most clems need. Even in wet, west Scotland, it could be hard to get one established.
It's hard to tell what size that corner is from the photo though.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Re: geum and geranium, l would say yes (because l have that). Don't know the sort of colour scheme you are after but my geums "Totally Tangerine" are flowering like mad already and with geranium "Azure Rush" (a sport of Rozanne), l think is a nice combination.

Seconded on rozzane ..its not fussy flowers first year and is very easy to propagate
  • @Fairygirl Its probably around the same size as the other side, a good metre radius, not a huge amount of room. I don't mind giving it a good soak every day, but I daresay the tree would just sook that up as well, it had membrane and chips all the way up to its trunk so it's probably desperate for a wee drink, I reckon it's been working hard.

It would have a little bit more space if I moved that cordyline I suppose........

Nevermind, I always thought that might be a wee bit of a long shot, I'll stick to my original plan of flooding that area with bulbs. How the hell the previous occupant managed to fit an additional 3 trees and various bushes in that small area is beyond me. I can't even get a wee flooer in beside my tree!  :D

@AnniD I was thinking of a spectrum of reds, purples and blues with some white in amongst it to pop against the dark fence.......that's the plan, but I'd be equally happy if it had more colours than a packet of crayons.  I'm generally easy to please.
