Uninvited bug inside wood burner ID

Can anyone ID this bug?
Sorry for the rubbish photos, but it was inside and the flash kept trying to go off.
It's about 1 1/4 inch long/ 3 cm.
Devon.

  • Kinda looks like a deaths head moth, sort of. Its got that stripey bit on its body and it looks like markings on the back of its head as well. Maybe too wee for that though.

I'd go with Queen Wasp, or possibly a Hornet.

Looks like a dust covered hornet to me. Have seen more of them already this year than I’ve seen ever in my life before. (Hornets that is, not dust covered ones)

I would say it is a hornet, you need to see the colour of the face to see if it is an Asian or European  one.

I think the journey down the chimney made have obscured the finer details.  :dizzy:
Note to self: have the chimney swept before Autumn.
