Can my apple tree be saved?

Hi,

I just moved into a property with an apple tree in the garden. I noticed it looks in bad shape, and the apples turn into little rotten balls.
Does anyone know what disease it has and if it can be treated?
The neighbours have already asked me if I will chop it down as they find it unsightly, but I'd rather try and cure it.
I've attached pictures of the 'apples'.

    Thats just last years harvest that didn't fall of the tree. Just remove them. 

    Can you take a picture of the whole tree?

    Could be brown rot.  Best to remove them and put them in the garbage (not your compost).  Or it could just be mummified fruit left from last year.  I always have a dozen or so that dry out on the branches of our apple tree.. the coddling moths eat every apple, so brown rot has never been a major concern.
