Yes, second one is an evening primrose and one of the more refined (cultivated) types I think, possibly Oenothera versicolor "Apricot delight' or 'Lemon sunset'.  It will self-seed in a well-mannered way, unlike the common O. biennis which can be invasive.

I did wonder about acanthus. I've still got shoots coming up from where I removed one years ago. Even the tiny first leaves are a very dark green and the edges a lot more spikey.
I'm sure I've seen it before, but I just can't remember....

It's the way the bottom leaves in the first pic differ from those on the flower spike that's doin' my 'ead in .............  :s

Where's @nutcutlet when you need her?   She's probably out in her garden ... I'm going out into mine in a few minutes .......

Thanks for all the help so far.

The plant was sown last year from a mixed pack of border perennial seeds like the other plant.

It didn't grow much last year and was the size of a side plate and about as high as one. The foliage didnt die over winter. Then this spring it's come to life and about 3 foot high.

I can hardly wait for the next installment :)

I'm pretty sure I had one appear in my garden almost on the lawn years ago and like you I let it grow. It's the little red buds I recognised.
I can't remember much more, so I'm guessing the flowers were insignificant and it turned out to be a big weed (in my opinion) of some sort.
    Hopefully yours isn't

I've just planted it and hoped for the best. Hopefully the flower are better because the foliage looks weed like to me.

How about White Moth Mullein - Verbascum blattaria albiflorum?
