Fixing back garden - A newbie

Hi

I am working on my back garden. Size 5.5 meters x 7.5 meters. The current level of the ground at maximum depth is 7 cm against the patio. I don't mind it to be lower than the patio.

Please see the pictures

I am not looking to get a golf course. Just a standard garden. Just wall to wall grass,no bedding or fancy stuff. Also there is what used to be a tree in a corner, which is now rotten and covered. I could easily push it.That will also go. Tree area is surrounded by concrete slabs. Previous occupant said that e tried to fix the lawn once but gave up after he found big stones/rubble every where he tried to dig it with a shovel but that was 5 years ago.

I also want to keep the cost low amuch as I can or should, for example if seeds are cheaper than turf for grass, I will go for seeds.

How much of top soil do I need if I need  it by looking at the images.

The ground is not perfectly leveled. I  will  first get rid of current grass, concrete slabs, and cultivate it using a shovel or rotavator before working with top soil.

I am new to this. Please can you help me to kick of this project. I may have missed a lot of other details or said some thing completely wrong, just don't want to get too scientific about this. Need something that is not an eye soar. Any help with right products to order and step by step instructions will be really great.

Thanks
Naz

Good luck with your project. This website has pretty much everything you need to know about lawns:

I would encourage you to consider some flower beds later down the line. They bring a lot of interest to the garden and are not hard work if you grow the right things. People here can help you choose appropriate plants.

Have you asked yourself why you actually want a lawn?
Is it because something there already is trying to be one!
What will you use it for.It could be a lot of hard work, mowing, raking, weeding etc for a small area.
Have you considered paving it all over instead to make a courtyard, you could add a couple of tubs of flowers if you wanted too.
If the previous owner had trouble with a lawn it may be easier not to have one!
