Any ideas what has created these holes?

We have just noticed lots of little holes appear by our garden shed. Not sure how clear they are in the picture, but any ideas what is causing the holes please?

Hi Clare - I'm guessing it could be birds. Magpies, jackdaws etc poke about looking for grubs - leatherjackets in particular - so it could be that they've found some tasty specimens.
Too small to be anything else, but someone else may have a different view and be able to offer another suggestion   :)

    Possibly bees or wasps?

It looks like there is mud around some of the holes that has been pushed out. Could be bugs emerging from their grub phase. It's the right time of year for maybugs.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

My money is on bees. I have the same in an area of my garden. They will move on quite quickly.
