Pyracantha hedge help

edited May 2018 in Problem solving
Hi

Wondering if anyone can offer any afvice.

We have a pyracantha hedge at the front of our house. Made up of 2 different types of pyracantha. One with orange berries, and the other with red.

For some reason, the red section this year has an abundance of berries (too many compared to the plants either side) and has now started to die.

Is there any hope for saving it or does it have to go?

No advice. but our Pyracantha looks to be dying off.  It has slowly been consumed by shade and a nearby fig.

It's not very obvious from the pictures to work out what is happening. Have you been pruning away dead branches this year leading to gaps along the bottom? I can see brown dried leaves and a lot of gaps. It's very rare for dead branches or dried areas to go missing.

Pyracantha shrubs are normally tough and seldom get any pests and diseases apart from Fireblight. Could be the reason one shrub is less affected over the other. There are more varieties that are more resistant to Fireblight. Either way, check on all your branches for their health, sometimes, the signs are there before it reaches the leaves. With Fireblight, you will need to prune back quite a bit of all the affected areas and remove any dead leaves from under the shrub promptly. Do not compost the material.
I also recommend scraping the top 2 inches of the soil layer and putting down fresh soil.
