I nipped out the tips on some of mine yesterday [ in the greenhouse ]
They are still very small though, so I don't think the tips would have been big enough for cuttings.
I was planning on letting them get to about 4" long, then cut about 3" cuttings.

Next question: would the root in water at this time of year or should I do them "normally"?

I have never tried the rooting in water method, so I would just stick to the standard way.

I took cuttings from my new S A last year, potted them up and tucked them beside a small conifer. They lay under feet of snow and frosts etc. Looked at them a couple of weeks ago and they are fine and dandy. Ditto the penstemon cuttings I took at the same time and abandoned in the same place!!

I lost dozens of young penstemon plants which were sitting outside the tunnel.

Just shows doesn't it how capricious nature is!
