Shrub removed... but what do I do next

I have just removed a shrub - not sure what type (dark green with lots of small red berries)  which was placed in a small wall.....wrong shrub in the wrong place. I reduced its size but unsure how to make sure it doesn't return - without using a chemical if possible.

    Looks like a cotoneaster, also come in yellow or orange berries, bees love it hardy very pretty shame you don't like it.

    I don't think cotoneasters always return.

    Many Thanks for response . Cotoneaster is also elsewhere in garden.
