Ground cover for damp shade

  • Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought of wild ginger. I like it as the shady damp area I have in mind is a favourite hangout for amphibians and it will give them cover. It's not the most colourful of the ideas provided but might work well.

Agree with micearguers ; I have a spreading fern in a quite dark part of my garden and under the drip of trees :- Blechnum penna-marina , from S.America but very hardy ; only to about 8" high . A choice species !

I put Dicentra Aurora in my damp semi-shade bits of the garden last Spring.  It flowers May to August (though mine flowered longer) and it spreads.  This area has sun from around 11am - 2pm-ish - the rest of the time it's semi-shade, but doesn't get to dark shade.

It's a lovely plant.  No feeding - just stuck it in and it's come up this Spring (started flowering April) twice the size.  If you fancy it, I'd check if it suits dark shade if dark shade is what you have.    If it gives a clue to shade - this is the only spot where Lily of the Valley will grow here.

Oops!  Meant to say - have had no slug/snail problems.  None about there.

Well, I don't know about OP, but I'm getting lots of new plant ideas from this thread! Thanks to all :)
