Was this jacket around the roots? I find the teabag things they grow seedlings in impede water take up. I lost a lot of penstemons, every one that I pulled out had one of these teabag type things around it.
Calendula are easy to grow. Just push seeds in at 3 inch intervals where you want them to grow.

Always pull the dreaded ‘tea bag’ off of your plants. It’s just a convenient way for the supplier to grow them.
Having said that that’s not the reason why they are looking dead now, not this quick, take the material off and repot, then keep them only just damp, they are a hot sunloving plant, don’t drown them. They may well grow up from the base, if not as FB says, so easy to grow from seeds, they’ll be up in a few days.

I can send you about five thousand seeds if you let me have your address.
